CODE OF CONDUCT

Dear Partner,

We at RedStar are very proud of our reputation, which is based on our achievements and our core values of respect, openness and inspiration. We have certainly also achieved our market position by propagating these core values, resulting in strong trust from our customers as well as our suppliers who enjoy working with us.
We are committed to strengthening the relationship with our suppliers. This document outlines the goals we pursue and the standards and expectations we apply to all suppliers working with us. It serves as a guide to ensure that we work with our partners in a respectful and sustainable manner. By adhering to these principles, we aim to create a supply chain that maintains the highest standards of social responsibility, sustainability and business ethics. Together, we uphold these values.
And through this cooperation, we achieve our common goals.

Irénke Meekma
CEO RedStar

Purpose of the Supplier Code of Conduct

At RedStar, we value our relationships with our suppliers and are committed to promoting a sustainable and responsible supply chain.

As part of our ongoing efforts to maintain the highest ethical standards and promote sustainability, we have developed this Supplier Code of Conduct.

Our mission is clear: to deliver fresh, tasty and healthy tomatoes. We understand the profound responsibility that comes with working with food – towards people, animals and the environment. Accepting social and environmental responsibility along the supply chain is not just an aspiration; it is a fundamental part of our company policy.

As an international company, we recognise our obligation to act responsibly across the entire supply chain. We expose ourselves and our business partners to the highest standards of social and environmental protection. Therefore, we are committed to adhering to international certification standards throughout our process chain.

By maintaining these standards, we aim to:

  • Ensuring quality and safety
  • Protection of People and Animals
  • Minimising Environmental Impacts
  • Promoting Transparency and Accountability
  • Leadership by Example
  • Commitment to Our Mission
  • ESG and CSRD reporting

Ensuring quality and safety

We prioritise delivering high-quality, safe tomatoes to our customers, maintaining their trust and satisfaction.

  • Suppliers are expected to comply with applicable food safety and hygiene laws and regulations relevant to the materials or services provided, as well as the (processing) activities, the location where these activities take place, and the resources used.
  • Suppliers are expected to adopt good agricultural practices and/or good manufacturing practices relevant to the goods or services being provided.
  • Suppliers are expected to meet additional requirements as specified in the Supplier Questionnaire (INK-F-3.5.1).

Protection of People and Animals

We stand for the welfare and rights of both humans and animals involved in our supply chain, ensuring fair treatment and humane practices.

Suppliers must comply with applicable human rights laws and regulations, in particular the following:

  • All employees must be treated with respect and dignity, and no harassment or practices involving rough or inhumane treatment of employees should be allowed.
  • Employing children for any service or product, in any country, is strictly prohibited, and documented policies must be implemented to prevent this.
  • Equal opportunities should be supported and discrimination should not be allowed, including in recruitment practices. Recruitment, compensation, fringe benefits, training, promotion, disciplinary action, termination, retirement or other employment-related decisions should be based on relevant and objective criteria.
  • Regarding trade union rights, ILO standards or, if stricter, applicable local workers’ social rights and the right to take collective action should be enforced.
  • All possible measures should be taken to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking, including imprisonment, forced labour, slave labour and exploitation.

Minimising Environmental Impacts

We strive to minimise our environmental footprint by promoting sustainable practices, reducing waste and conserving natural resources.

Suppliers must comply with all relevant environmental laws and regulations and take responsibility for the local and global environment in which they operate by conducting business in a way that does not adversely affect the planet or natural resources. In particular, the following applies:

  • Responsible management of water, energy and other natural resources.
  • Setting reduction targets (preferably based on scientific evidence) for their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Avoiding and reducing the generation of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, maximising recycling and improving the productive use or safe disposal of waste.
  • Conservation of biodiversity and protection of wildlife and endangered species.
  • Showing responsibility towards the communities in which they operate and managing the impact of corporate and factory activities on those communities.

As agriculture uses 70% of our drinking water resources worldwide, without continuous freshwater supplies, agriculture cannot produce healthy and safe fruit and vegetables. Therefore, assessing water risks along the supply chain and the responsible use of water is fundamental for the fruit and vegetable product group.

Aware of this great challenge, RedStar has set itself the following goal:

By 31 December 2025, we expect 100% of our producers in the countries of Spain, Morocco and Tunisia to be certified to recognised water standards.

The following standards are accepted by RedStar:

  • Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS)
  • Global G.A.P. SPRING
  • On the way to Planet Proof
  • Fairtrade Standard
  • Rainforest Alliance Agriculture Standard
  • SIZA Environmental Standard
  • SCS Sustainably Grown

We know that this goal is very ambitious and can pose major challenges for our partners in production, which is why we recommend the WWF Water Risk Filter to identify and prioritise regions with particularly high water risks (free registration at https://riskfilter.org/water/home) OR access the SIFAV list at SIFAV-High-Water-Risk-Region-List_2024.pdf.

Promoting Transparency and Accountability

We believe in transparency and accountability at every stage of our operations, promoting trust among stakeholders and facilitating informed decision-making.

  • Suppliers must ensure that their own suppliers (and, if that supplier is a non-producing supplier such as an agent or trader, that supplier’s own supplier) comply with this Code of Conduct or its equivalent.
  • Suppliers must map their supply chain and ensure that all details, including batch name and description, location and country of origin of the product are fully traceable for both their supplier and that batch’s own supplier. This information must be available for inspection at all times.

Leadership by Example

As an international company, we strive to set a positive example of responsible business practices, inspiring others to do the same.

We expect all our suppliers to adhere to the following principles:

Compliance with laws and regulations

As a supplier to RedStar, you must comply with all applicable laws, regulations and standards, including those of the European Union relating to labour rights, environmental protection, food safety and supply chain transparency. In addition, we expect you to comply with the requirements set out in the EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSRD), ensuring transparency by reporting relevant environmental, social and governance (ESG) data[1].

Commitment to Our Mission

Our mission at RedStar is to provide healthy and sustainable tomatoes while minimising our environmental impact and contributing to the well-being of the communities we serve. We expect our suppliers to align with this mission by:

  • Ensuring that all workers involved in the production and delivery of goods have fair and safe working conditions.
  • Implementing environmentally friendly practices and promoting sustainable agricultural management to minimise ecological footprints.
  • Providing the highest quality products that meet strict food safety standards and contribute to healthy lifestyles for consumers.

ESG reporting and CSRD requirements

As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability, we expect our suppliers to actively participate in ESG reporting and comply with the requirements of the CSRD. This includes providing detailed information on your environmental, social and good governance performance, as well as your impact on society and the environment.

By adhering to this Supplier Code of Conduct, you demonstrate your commitment to conducting business with integrity, respect for human and environmental rights, and in line with our shared mission of sustainability and social responsibility. We look forward to working with you to create positive change in our supply chain and beyond.
